This Wiki is intended to be a place for [[Linux|http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux]] Noobies to find useful information. There seems to be a lot of information already out there on [[Forums|http://www.kubuntuforums.net/]] and websites, but, half this stuff doesn't seem to work...for me at least! You can change the look of the login screen without too much hassle. First off, use [[Adept Package Manager|http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adept_Package_Manager]] to install KDM Theme Manager (kdmtheme). Once installed you will need a new login theme to install. You can get these from [[KDE-Look.org|http://www.kde-look.org]]. Download some login themes and save them somewhere convenient. I put mine in ~/.themes/kdm/. Run the KDM Theme Manager application and click on the Administrator Mode button to open up the install theme button. Click on the install theme button to get the browse dialog. Go to the directory where you have downloaded the login theme and select one of the themes. Click the OK button and the theme will be installed.\n\n''WATCH OUT NOOB!!'' You may find that existing login themes get overwritten by new themes that you have installed. It turns out that the tarballs consist of \n*a directory and \n*the files that make up the theme. \nIf the directory in the tarball happens to be the same name as the directory in an existing theme it will overwrite the existing theme. Let me make that clearer with a crappy example:\n\nYou download 2 themes and use Ark to explore their contents and find that they both contain a directory called kubuntu. You install the first theme and all looks well. You then install the second theme, but, it overwrites the first one because the directory name in the tarball is the same as the directory name in the first! Download the file from the [[Mozilla Firefox|http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/]] website to your home directory. Use Konqueror to view the contents of your home directory. Click on the Firefox tarball. Extract the contents to the .Mozilla folder in your home directory. If Firefox has not already been installed then a new Firefox directory will be created. If Firefox already exists it will be overwritten with the new version.

Save the icon theme into your home directory or into the .icons directory within your home directory.\n*Open the KDE Control Center or choose System Settings from the K menu\n*Find the Icons settings. This will vary depending on your version of KDE\n*Click the Install button\n*Select the theme file you downloaded\nKDE will now install the theme and you will be able to select it from the list.

If you make the classic noob mistake of deleting more than you intended with an rm -r * don't panic! I made this mistake with /usr/share/icons when I was trying to install some additional icon themes. I intended to remove one of the themes I'd copied into /usr/share/icons and accidentally deleted all of the icons! This makes using any application just a little bit harder! I thought I might need to re-install from the Live CD, but, after some exploring I found a Filesystem.squashfs file on the Live CD. This is a compressed copy of the entire file system. So, if I could find a way of reading this file I could then just copy the relevant directories and their contents back to where they belong and my icons will be back to normal. Touch.\n\nThe magic command is mount. All you have to do is mount the file and you get a copy of the whole filesystem as it was when you first installed Kubuntu. It seems like one of the hardest things to do with Linux is connect to work's Micro$oft network over a VPN. And it's been giving me grief for a while now. But, the Noob has cracked it! Some of the problems were self-inflicted (as usual), but, once I removed myself from the equation it worked a charm. \n\nThese are the steps you need to take to get a VPN connection working:\n#Use the Adept package manager to get the following packages:\n##network-manager-pptp\n##pptpd\n##pptp-linux\n##kvpnc\nTo connect to a Microsoft network requires the PPTP stuff. Apparently, it's all very insecure, but, that's what you need. More importantly, you need the first 2 packages, at least, to get the [[KVPNc|http://home.gna.org/kvpnc/en/index.html]] program to work.\n\nYou'll obviously need the correct IP addresses for your network gateway and network IP range. Make sure that you set the connection type to PPTP.\n\n''Noob Watch!'' One of the first errors I got was an Authentication Failure message. After playing around with the IP addresses I was having no luck. I then checked the settings for my connection and found that the Save Password box was checked and there was no password! So, even though the program prompts you for a password, it doesn't use it! Once I'd unchecked the box, everything starting working better than ET's communicator.\n\nOf course, once you are connected to work you're going to want to access your files. It's not like Windoze, where you can map a network drive. I'm sure I've seen reference to a number of mount commands that will get you hooked directly into your network files. But, I have no idea at this point how to do that so I'm sticking with Konqueror.
